AIA's Safety Assessment Program Training for 2024 Now Open for Registration
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is hosting a Safety Assessment Program (SAP) Evaluator Training on December 11-12, 2024. The training is designed for licensed architects, engineers, and certified building inspectors who want to become Building Evaluators in the SAP.
The training will take place virtually from 12-4pm ET each day. Attendees will learn how to assess the safety of buildings in the aftermath of a disaster, with a focus on earthquakes, wind, and water damage. The training will cover the Applied Technology Council’s ATC 20 and ATC 45 guidelines, as well as the Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS).
Upon completion of the training, attendees will be eligible to become certified as Building Evaluators in the SAP. The SAP is managed by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) in partnership with AIA and other professional organizations. It is a nationally recognized program that utilizes volunteers to assist local governments with post-disaster safety assessments.
In addition to the training, attendees will also need to purchase the ATC 20 and ATC 45 manuals, which are not included in the cost of the course. The training is open to licensed architects, engineers, and certified building inspectors, as well as students and emerging professionals. However, only licensed individuals will be eligible to become certified as Building Evaluators in the SAP.
The AIA’s SAP training is part of the organization’s broader Disaster Assistance Program, which provides leadership, advocacy, and training for architects who want to use their skills to support disaster response and recovery efforts. The training is also an opportunity for architects to earn AIA Continuing Education Learning Units (CE LUs).
